The top 5 questions patients ask their aesthetic doctor

The top 5 questions patients ask their aesthetic doctor
“Can I just ask…?”

Mar 24th, 2021

Of course you can! As a practitioner, you want to make sure patients are educated on the treatment, completely at ease, and have all the information they need to make an informed decision. Some patients are more forthcoming than others when it comes to asking questions, but we understand that others may find it hard to ask the questions they really want to know the answer to.

We’ve put together some of the most commonly asked questions and queries at The Anti Wrinkle Clinic with all the answers, to help you know more about everything from skincare and treatments to ethics and education.

The five most-asked questions

  1. What’s the best anti-ageing treatment to have?

I wish I could wave a magic wand and eradicate patient’s skin concerns, giving them all an instant healthy glowing complexion. However, nothing in life is that easy and it’s the same when it comes to aesthetic treatment.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to aesthetics; every face is unique and has different areas of concern. For the best results, every patient needs a bespoke approach. In most instances, a combination method is best where we take the whole face into consideration and use one or more treatments. A great example of that is the Anti Wrinkle Clinic’s Signature Packages. Each package is aimed at different concerns, from dull skin and tired eyes, to dry and lax skin. These packages all consist of up to 5 different treatments to get the best, most holistic results.

We create full facial harmony by ensuring what we do in one area of the face, doesn’t accentuate other affected areas. So instead of asking “What’s the best anti-ageing treatment?”  ask, “What’s the best approach for me?”

  1. When should I start having treatment?

This is all very much down to the individual, although we must affirm that we do not treat anybody under the age of 18. Scientifically, the first signs of ageing appear around the ages 26-27, but this doesn’t mean you need to jump straight into having injectable treatments. We believe everyone should be taking care of their skin, regardless of age, and the best place to start is looking at your lifestyle:

Diet: vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in foods such as fruit, vegetables and healthy fats are consistently associated with fewer wrinkles and less age-related dryness

Sleep/rest: during sleep the skin’s blood flow increases, collagen is rebuilt & the body repairs damage from UV exposure, which reducing wrinkles and age spots

Stress management – stress can cause wrinkles to form due to the high amounts of cortisol, breaking down the skin's collagen & elastin.

Sun exposure – UV radiation causes DNA changes in the skin that can lead to premature ageing & skin cancer.

Exercise – regular exercise slows cell ageing and boosts overall health.

Skincare – using an advanced clinical skincare regimen is the best treatment for the skin at any age. It's never too late to start a skincare regime and it is the foundation of any future treatment.

  1. “I think I’d like some Botox in my lips… or is it fillers?”

There’s a lot of confusion between "Botox" (anti-wrinkle injections) and dermal fillers. Lots of people refer to all aesthetic injectable treatments as “Botox” but this isn’t correct. In fact, many people also don’t realise that “Botox” is actually a brand of anti-wrinkle injection, and not the name of the treatment. So, what’s the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and fillers?

Anti-wrinkle injections: these treatments contain the ingredient Botulinum Toxin A, which is injected into the muscle and works by blocking signals from the nerves so muscles can't contract. This makes wrinkles relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines. Results can last between 3-6 months.

Dermal fillers: there are different types of fillers with different ingredients, but the most commonly used fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA naturally exists in the body and these fillers work by boosting the skin’s supply, adding volume and diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used mainly in the lower two-thirds of the face and results last between 6-12 months.

Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are medical procedures which should be thoroughly considered and only carried out by highly experience practitioners.

‍4. “Are you currently using any skincare products?”

Now, this is a question that I ask my patients on a regular basis. Sadly, I rarely hear the answer I want to. Most patients are keen to tell me about their ‘amazing skincare regimen’, but when I ask them about the products they’re using, I realise it’s not quite as amazing as hoped. Lots of people believe spending a fortune must mean a fantastic product, but this is not the case. A regimen of advanced clinical products prescribed by a dermatologist or a facial aesthetics provider will give tangible results, especially when compared with over-the-counter products,

Sadly, for decades, people have been misled by the efficacy of over-counter, mainstream, luxury skincare brands. The majority of these products don’t contain any advanced clinically active ingredients – hence why they’re available over the counter. The skin is a living organ and the largest in our body. When it goes through illness, in the form of skin manifestations such as wrinkles, dryness, acne, pigmentation, rosacea and more, it needs careful assessment and treatment. This can only be achieved with prescribed clinical products by a doctor, and continuous monitoring and maintenance. Over-the-counter skin products which solely feel and smell good will increase skin sensitivity and actually accelerate ageing.

  1. “Can you make me look like this celebrity?”

It’s one thing asking your hairdresser to copy a celebrity’s hair style, but it’s another when you’re asking your practitioner to copy a celebrity’s face!

While a photograph can help your practitioner to understand what it is you’re trying to achieve, the notion you can be made to look like a celebrity is practically impossible, and furthermore, morally unacceptable.

We live in the era of social media and sadly for the younger generation this is their only point of reference. There is a belief that you must have certain facial and body features, a particular shaped smile, a 6-pack or look like your favourite celebrity in order to be happy.

My consultations have always been an acceptance and celebration of a patient's individuality and my ethos through my advice and treatments is to maintain and preserve this individuality. Patients need to embrace who they are, always be unique and realise that their individuality makes them beautiful.

“And just one last question…?”

There are many other questions people regularly ask and many other questions you may have. Never feel afraid to ask your practitioner as many questions as you want so you can make an informed decision on your treatment. If the practitioner ever tries to hurry things along or doesn’t answer your questions in a competent way, then please see this as a red flag and consider going elsewhere.

At the Anti Wrinkle Clinic our consultations are the footing of the practitioner-patient relationship; we use this time to not only find the most appropriate course of treatment for you, but to also ensure your safety, answer your concerns and help you feel relaxed.

If you have any questions for us then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
