Tear Trough Treatments

What are tear troughs?

Tear troughs are dark areas that lie between the lower eyelids and the upper cheeks. These areas sometimes become deepened and shadowed as a natural part of the ageing process, making one look old, tired and less youthful in appearance. The dark hollows are formed because of a loss of soft tissue volume in the cheek area combined with the weakening of the orbital septum.

Not everyone is destined to develop tear troughs; their formation is also down to genetics and sometimes too many late nights and heavy partying. Some feel that they help to give a face character, but most people would gladly banish them forever!

The good news is that a revolutionary new treatment has been developed which removes tear troughs quickly, painlessly and effectively.

What does a tear trough treatment involve?

At the Antiwrinkle Clinic, we remove tear trough bags, puffiness and dark circles by using micro cannulae – or tiny needles – to direct injections of dermal filler precisely into the areas to be treated. Note: it is important that this procedure should only be carried out by a qualified and experienced practitioner.

Although the area under the eyelid is very sensitive, the treatment is completely painless as a topical anaesthetic is applied before the treatment begins and the dermal filler itself also contains a degree of anaesthesia.

The filler is then thoroughly massaged with fingertips to blend it into the cheekbones, plump up the hollows and conceal any dark circles.

The entire procedure takes no longer than approximately fifteen to twenty minutes and the effects last up to a year. The results are immediately visible and patients are often amazed at how many years have been instantly erased from their faces.

Are there any side effects?

In the days following the treatment, there might be some slight puffiness, swelling and bruising, which will quickly subside and can be easily disguised with makeup if so desired. You won’t need any downtime to recover, and you will be able to resume your normal daily activities the same day.

Is it the right procedure for me?

A personal consultation with our practitioner is necessary to find out whether the treatment is right for you. A combination of eyelid surgery and tear trough injections might be considered necessary in some cases.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate just how fabulous this tear trough treatment worked out for our lovely patient. The results were amazing and instantaneous.

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular treatments at the Antiwrinkle Clinic. We are often asked about side effects and wanted to put your mind at rest if you are thinking of booking in with us for treatment.

As with any injectable treatment, there are associated side effects such as bruising and swelling. With certain dermal fillers, we would expect some swelling which can last for a few days.

Bruising can also happen (although not expected) so we prefer to err on the side of caution and schedule your appointment where you have some downtime afterwards just in case, especially if it’s your first treatment, especially on the lips.

To reduce this it’s best to avoid drinking alcohol and taking omega-3 supplements for a couple of days beforehand as both can thin your blood. If you’re prone to bruising it might be wise to take some arnica tablets before and afterwards to minimise the risk but it's not essential.
